UCLA ASDA and MEND Partnership
MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity) is a non-profit organization that has partnered with UCLA dental students to provide essential dental care to the underprivileged community. Through their dedicated volunteer work, UCLA dental students have been able to make a significant impact on the lives of those in need.
Over the past year, these compassionate volunteers have donated more than 520 dental procedures to 232 patients who otherwise may not have had access to such crucial care. This remarkable collaboration has not only improved the oral health of individuals but also fostered a sense of dignity and well-being in the community.
The exemplary entrepreneurial work of the UCLA dental students has resulted in the inclusion of clinic sessions in the curriculum of the prestigious UCLA School of Dentistry. Faculty members have also generously volunteered their time to supervise the students during these clinic sessions, ensuring the highest quality of care is provided.
Under the auspices of the UCLA ASDA (American Student Dental Association) Community Service Committee, the clinic sessions will continue to serve the community, extending their reach and impact. This ongoing commitment to community service reflects the core values of UCLA ASDA and their dedication to improving oral health for all.
Clinical Dental Outreach
Clinical Dental Outreach is an organization at UCLA that offers pre-dental students a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on dental experience in a clinical environment. Through this program, students are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to become future dental professionals.
Participants in the Clinical Dental Outreach program receive comprehensive training, including an 8-hour infection control course, CPR certification, and California Dental Practice Act certification. These certifications ensure that the students are well-prepared to provide safe and effective dental assistance.
Currently, the students of Clinical Dental Outreach are actively involved in assisting dental professionals and students at Meet Each Need with Dignity (MEND) in the underprivileged community of Pacoima, CA. Their responsibilities include aiding in suctioning during cleanings and restorative procedures, sterilizing tools, preparing operatories with equipment, documenting processes in Dentrix, seating patients, and even taking their blood pressure.
Through their participation in MEND, these dedicated students not only gain valuable practical experience but also contribute to improving the oral health and overall well-being of the underprivileged individuals they serve.
